EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT STUDY: GEORGIA NEEDS GRADUAL AND FLEXIBLE APPROACH TO APPROXIMATION WITH EU SANITARY AND PHYTO-SANITARY LEGISLATION
“In 2020-2021, Georgia has progressed in approximating its legal framework with EU food safety standards”, but the country needs “a gradual and flexible approach to approximation and enforcement in sanitary and phyto-sanitary”, the European Parliament said in a recent study on Georgia’s fulfillment of obligations under the Association Agreement (in 2020-2022). The document indicates that “legal approximation with sanitary and phyto-sanitary standards is challenging in Georgia, given both the weight of the agricultural sector in terms of employment (about 50%), the vulnerability and small size of enterprises in this sector”.
