    SHEVARDNADZE MIGHT NOT PARTICIPATE IN CIS SUMMIT

    According to press secretary of the President, Mr. Shevardnadze has not made a decision on participating in CIS summit yet. Mr. Abashidze, the press secretary, allowed for the possibility of not attending the summit due growing tensity in Georgia-Russia relations.


    TBILISI SIGNIFIED APRIL 9 ANNIVERSARY

    Today, near the parliament house a meeting was held in the memory of April 9, 1989. Back in 1989 Soviet Army brutally attacked peaceful participants of a meeting supporting independence of the country.


    RUSSIAN DUMA CANCELLED GOVERNMENTAL DECISION ON TRANSFERRING CERTAIN MILITARY FACILITIES TO GEORGIA

    Yesterday, at Russian Duma session parliament nullified regulation of Mr. Kirienko, temporary executive prime minister of Russia on transfer of certain army facilities to Georgia. Facilities are of office character.


    RUSSIA ACCUSES LEADING PARTY OF GEORGIA IN INSPIRING ANTI-RUSSIAN CAMPAIGN

    Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) stated that starting February 1998 leading Georgian party has been conducting anti-Russian campaign. The claims are based on assumed participation of Russian in February 9, 1998 events in Georgia.


    ABKHAZIAN ADMINISTRATION CAN NOT SUPPRESS TERRORIST ACTS

    According to the press service of so-called Abkhazian Republic, armed groups of terrorist (about 100 people) get into Abkhazian territory from Zugdidi to upset the situation. Then they go back to Zugdidi.

    RAISING PENSIONS IN ABKHAZIA

    Parliament of self-proclaimed Republic of Abkhazia adopted a law raising the pensions to certain categories of pensioners. The law named 10 categories, where the minimum rate is 5 new Russian rubles and the maximum – 50.3 rubles.


    UNICEF WILL ALLOCATED $1.5M FOR SOCIAL PROJECTS

    This information was released at the meeting of Mr. Boris Tolstopjatov, Executive Director of the Fund with Mr. Menagarishvili, Minister of Foreign Affairs. According to the Minister, the amount allocated will be used for the benefits of socially unprotected mothers and children.


    GEORGIAN ENERGY SYSTEM HAS BEEN OPERATION IN ISOLATION FROM NEIGHBORING ENERGY SYSTEMS DURING THE END OF MARCH – BEGINNING OF APRIL

    According to Sakenergo, transmission lines of Kavkasioni are disconnected. Frequency of the electricity is within the norms.


    MINISTER OF ECONOMY STATED THE INCREASE IN DEPOSITS

    According to Mr. Papava, the Minister of Economy, the amount of deposits reached up to 58. 2 million Lari and for 1997 totaled to 138.7 million Lari.


    OIL EXTRACTION IN MARCH WAS 9,347 TONS

    30,400 tons of oil was extracted in the first quarter of this year, which is 23.4% less than for the last year. The reasons of the decrease are due to insufficient work of Ioris Veli.


    NEW POLICY IN ENVIRONMENT AND NATURAL RESOURCE PROTECTION SECTOR

    According to experts, new policy developed by the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Natural Resources (4 draft laws and 50 normative acts), will regulate the sector-related issues and foster the economic reform in the country. The policy will also control importation of genetically modified living organisms used for food products.


    DUTCH GOVERNMENT CREATED INDEPENDENT FUNDS TO FOSTER THE DEVELOPMENT OF ECONOMIC RELATIONS WITH GEORGIA

    According to Mr. Zaldastanishvili, Minster of Foreign Economic Relation and Trade, creation of the funds in one of the basic activities envisioned by Holland-Georgian Memorandum. Program on Economic Cooperation being conducted in Holland provided for funding Dutch companies in Georgia on the first stage of their development – preparation of business plans and investigation of investment environment.


    REVIVAL OF SERICULTURE IN GEORGIA

    This issue was discussed at yesterday’s press conference held at the Ministry of Agriculture and Food. In conjunction with IFAD the ministry dratted the program ($228,100) on rehabilitation of sericulture in Georgia.

    JSC VACHNADZIANI AND JSC AGROINSVEST ARE ALLOWED TO PURCHASE THE BLOCK OF SHARES OF JSC KAKHETI BREAD AND MARNEULI ELEVATOR CURRENTLY IN STATE OWNERSHIP

    According to the President ordinance, block of shares will be sold on open sale, provided future purchasers are willing to invest appropriate amount. The price of packet of share is 20% of their nominal price.

    ACCORDING TO OFFICIAL STATISTIC DATA, 62% OR 1.5M OF EMPLOYED PEOPLE ARE SELF-EMPLOYED

    52% from these people are engaged in agriculture. According Mr. Basilia, aide to the President in the field of economic reforms, the list of employed people also include middle-aged nationals that have tangible or intangible revenue from land parcels of 1 or more hectares.


    BUSINESS ON REFUGEES

    According to Georgian Ministry of Internal Affairs, General Anti-Economic Misdemeanor and Corruption Agency and Department of Criminal Policy, 23 cards (worth over 3,000 Lari) designated for free metro transportation of refugees were exempted from an Currency Exchange site belonging to one of banks in Tbilisi. Investigation showed that the cards were exchanged in the hard currency by head of the refugee department at one of the Tbilisi rayon office.


    INVESTIGATION OF STATE PROPERTY THEFT AND CONTRABAND OF FOOD PRODUCTS IN LARGE QUANTITIES

    According to Georgian Ministry of Internal Affairs, Head of one of the Gardabani Rayon village councils was accused in the theft of state property. Last year, by means of fake documentation from GPC (Georgian Pipeline Company), he appropriated 17,000 Lari compensation on damage and 9,000 Lari moral compensation for the citizens from pipeline insertion in the territory of the village.
