    ECONOMY MINISTER: THE GOVERNMENT CONSISTENTLY PURSUES POLICY OF ECONOMY AND TRADE DIVERSIFICATION

    “Our government consistently pursues policy of economy and trade diversification”, Georgia’s Minister of Economy and Sustainable Development Natia Turnava assures.

    As the Minister indicates, Georgia has currently free trade agreement signed with the EU, as well as with China, Hong Kong.

    IN Q1, GEORGIAN VISITORS SPENT $135M ABROAD

    Reformeter (project of International School of Economics at Tbilisi State University (ISET), being supported by USAID’s project “Governance for Growth” (G4G)) reported that Georgian visitors spent $135 million abroad in the 1st quarter.

    According to Reformeter, the biggest share in total expenses had food and drinks – 33%.


    GEORGIA JOINED TO ANOTHER INTERNATIONAL TREATY

    Georgian Ministry of Environmental Protection and Agriculture reported that the country joined to International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture. Georgia became the 146th member of the Treaty.


    GEORGIAN PARTNERSHIP FUND AND HUNGARIAN “EXIMBANK” AGREED ON COOPERATION DEEPENING

    Georgian Partnership Fund declared about signing of memorandum with Hungarian ExImBank. Regarding subject of the memorandum, the Fund said only that the parties agreed on cooperation deepening.


    ISET PI: PENETRATION RATE OF AGROINSURANCE IS STILL VERY LOW AND NUMBER OF UNIQUE BENEFICIARIES DECREASES

    The article, published in blog of Policy Institute of International School of Economics at Tbilisi State University (ISET PI), indicates that “the penetration rate of [agro]insurance is still very low and we observe a decrease in the number of unique beneficiaries”.

    Among challenges, the authors name farmers’ low willingness to subscribe to agroinsurance programs, lack of qualified agroinsurance agents and lack of agrometeorological data.

    IN Q1, MEDICAL INSURANCE ACCOUNTED FOR 69.5% IN PORTFOLIO OF “ARDI INSURANCE”

    Georgian State Service for Insurance Supervision reported that in total premium, attracted by Ardi Insurance as of March 31, medical (health) insurance accounted for 69.5% (against of 66% in the same period of 2018). In this segment, the company attracted 9.29 million lari, increasing the volume by 14.3% year-on-year.


    IN Q1, MEDICAL INSURANCE ACCOUNTED FOR 47.3% IN PORTFOLIO OF “IRAO”

    Georgian State Service for Insurance Supervision reported that in total premium, attracted by Irao as of March 31, medical (health) insurance accounted for 47.3% (against of 47.1% in the same period of 2018). In this segment, the company attracted 4.5 million lari, increasing the volume by 25.4% year-on-year.


    IN Q1, MEDICAL INSURANCE ACCOUNTED FOR 57.6% IN PORTFOLIO OF “ALPHA”

    Georgian State Service for Insurance Supervision reported that in total premium, attracted by Alpha as of March 31, medical (health) insurance accounted for 57.6% (against of 67.7% in the same period of 2018). In this segment, the company attracted 5.07 million lari, decreasing the volume by 14.2% year-on-year.

    “IPM”: PUBLIC SPLITS IN OPINION CONCERNING CONSTRUCTION OF HYDROELECTRIC STATIONS

    Referring to countrywide poll of 350 respondents, Institute for Polling and Marketing (IPM, Tbilisi-based market research company) reported that Georgian population is split in opinion concerning construction of hydroelectric stations in the country.

    In particular, according to IPM, 33% consider that construction of hydroelectric station will bring benefit to the country, while 31% consider that it will harm instead.
