    UZBEKISTAN EXPRESSED DESIRE TO JOIN GUAM

    As it was declared during today’s briefing at the Foreign Affairs Ministry, on April 2 in Moscow after the session of the CIS Council of the Foreign Affairs Ministers at the Ukrainian Embassy was held the meeting of the Foreign Affairs Ministers of GUAM member-countries and Uzbekistan. According to the Foreign Affairs Ministry, this is the first time that Uzbekistan participated in the sessions of GUAM member-countries.


    THE PRESIDENT OF UKRAINE IS COMING TO TBILISI THIS EVENING

    Today Leonid Kuchma will meet the President of Georgia. According to the Georgian Foreign Affairs Minister, after this meeting will be signed the agreement on economical cooperation in 1999-2008.


    SHEVARDNADZE RECEIVED GREETINGS FROM UK AND TURKEY IN CONNECTION TO THE EVENTS IN SUPSA

    According to the letter of the British Prime-Minister Tony Blair, Georgia plays the important role in the reclamation of the Caspian power resources. He congratulates the Georgian leader and the country’s population with the upcoming event in Supsa on April 17.


    THE INTERIOR MINISTERS OF GEORGIA AND UKRAINE SIGNED THE AGREEMENT ON COOPERATION

    The Ukrainian Interior Minister General Yuri Kravchenko is in Tbilisi with the official 2-day visit. According to the press center of the Georgian Interior Ministry, the agreement that was signed today provides the unification of efforts in fight against organized crime, further expansion of business cooperation of the counties’ law machinery.


    THE CHAIRMAN OF THE PARLIAMENT RECEIVED THE GREEK AMBASSADOR

    Spiros Georgilis, who has recently took the office of the Ambassador, declared that Georgia plays one of the most important roles in the foreign politics of Greece, in connection to which for him is very important to know the point of view of the Georgian Parliament’s Chairman about the processes taking place in the country. He informed that the Greek political and business groups expect relationships with Georgia.

    Yesterday during the special convention of the Social-Democratic Party the delegates declared on leaving the social-democrat lines collectively. It was decided to dissolve the party and found the new party of the left course.

    This British firm became the winner in the tender on the right of realizing obligatory customs control in Georgia. As the Finance Minister David Onoprishvili declared yesterday, all 13 members of the tender committee unanimously awarded the first place to this firm.


    THE WB IS ISSUING $108M ON CONDUCTING IRRIGATIVE AND DRAIN WORKS IN GEORGIA

    The project is planned for the period till 2009 and is divided in 3, 4 and 3-year stages. In the first stage, it is planned to issue $38 million, from which $25 has already been issued.


    CONTINUE WORKS ON CREATING THE PROJECT OF THE CAPITAL’S WATER SUPPLY AND SANITATION

    Two major directions of the water-supply reform, the realization of which is assigned to the special commission according to the President’s order, are determined. The first direction is the institutional reform, which provides the restructuring of the water-supply system and the attraction of the private sector.

    The former head of the mission’s fund Hunter Monroe yesterday introduced his successor Christopher Lain to the Georgian President, and characterized him as a good economist, who received work experience in Russia and Luthitania.

    Monroe expressed assurance, that cooperation with IMF in Georgia will continue and become firm.


    THE MEETING OF THE ENERGETICS MINISTERS OF BSEC COUNTRIES IN TBILISI IS DELAYED SINE DIE

    According to the Fuel and Energetics Minister, have occurred financial problems with the meeting’s preparation. Let us remember that the meeting has been delayed before.


    TO TBILISI POWER IS SUPPLIED DAY-AND-NIGHT, TO THE REGIONS – BY THE SCHEDULE

    As the deputy Minister Mikhail Menteshashvili declared today during the press conference at the Fuel and Energetics Ministry, the power supply to the regions as Chokhatauri, Khoni, Borjomi, Kareli, Akhmeta, Marneuli is limited because of non-payment. He noted that currently the daily consumption is about 23.5 million kWh, however 40 million are needed for supplying the power without limitations to the whole territory.


    THE MAJOR CONTRABAND CURRENT IS GOING THROUGH THE SOUTHERN OSSETIAN TERRITORY

    The officers of the Georgian customs service conducted the raid on the conditional border with the self-declared republic Southern Ossetia. In a few hours were stopped more than 60 units of cars and cargo transport, by which were imported contraband grain, flour, oil products, feed-stuff, cigarettes and other production.


    THE WB ISSUED A $60M CREDIT FOR THE PERFECTION OF THE GEORGIAN EDUCATIONAL SYSTEM

    According to Joseph Owen, the permanent representative of the WB in Georgia, the credit is issued in 3 stages; the first tranche is $15-20 million. The length of the project is 10 years.

    About this was declared during today’s press conference at the Fuel and Energetics Ministry. It is planned to conduct privatization this summer.

    THE STATE PROGRAM OF THE GEORGIAN LANGUAGE IS THREATENED BY DISRUPTION

    According to the Education Ministry, this is caused by the reduction of its expenditures twice provided by the budget of 1999. In particular, the state can not continue paying additional 10 Lari per month to the secondary school teachers of the Georgian language for additional classes with students, who are not Georgians.


    THE ABKHAZIAN SIDE RELEASED ONE MEMBER OF THE CAPTURED GEORGIAN SEINER’S CREW

    Nato Kvirkvelia, the only woman of the 10-member crew, was delivered to the Georgian side yesterday during the quadrilateral meeting in the village Chuburkhinji of Gali region. She declared that the conditions in the Abkhazian captivity were normal.
