    STATE COMMISSION ON ELABORATING PROPOSALS OVER SHARING AUTHORITIES BETWEEN TBILISI AND BATUMI HAS BEEN CREATED

    The Justice Minister Joni Khetsuriani will head the commission. The commission will consist of Aslan Abashidze (the Chairman of the Supreme Council of Ajara), Rostom Japaridze (vice-chairman of the Parliament), Nino Burjanadze (Chairman of the Parliament Committee on Foreign Affairs), Roland Giligashvili (Chairman of the Parliament Committee on the Point of Orders) – 18 people in all.


    ARDZINBA HAS CUT SHORT HIS VACATION

    The President of the self-proclaimed Republic of Abkhazia returned to Sukhumi in connection of murdering Zurab Achba on August 15. He held the emergency session of the Security Council during which he called for the law enforcement bodies to find criminals in a short period.

    According to the President’s decree of August 15, the Deputy Interior Minister, the former chairman of the Tax Department was prompted to this rank.


    2 OUT OF 8 RADIOISOTOPIC GENERATORS, LEFT IN GEORGIA BY THE RUSSIAN ARMY HAVE NOT BEEN FOUND YET

    In 1999, 2 radioisotopic heat generators, containing strontium-90, were found in high-mountain region Svaneti. One of them did not have a protective leaden container, which apparently had been destroyed by hunters for the non-ferrous metals (the heater made of the pure copper has disappeared).

    GOVERNMENTAL COMMISSION ON STUDYING THE QUESTION OVER BANNING PETROL CONTAINING LEAD BEING CREATED

    The Environment Protection Minister Nino Chkhobadze offered to create this commission at the government session jn August 16. She declared that banning the realization of petrol, containing lead, would go into effect in EU in 2001, as a result there was a danger that the volume of its delivery to Georgia would increase.


    INSURANCE SUPERVISORY SERVICE HAS BEEN AFFORDED A RIGHT TO KEEP 70% OF LICENSE FEES AT ITS DISPOSAL

    The President’s decree of August 15 complied with the adequate request of this service. During 2000, 70% of license fees will be transferred to the treasury accounts of non-budget revenues of the service.


    FINANCING TERMS OF REFUGEES’ PROJECTS TO BE “50% GRANT – 50% CREDIT”

    The Deputy State Minister Tedo Isakadze made this announcement at the government session on August 16, while talking on the creation of a special fund of $50 million under the direction of the WB. As it is known, this fund, crated by the UN with the active participation of the US, is appropriated to refugees from the Tskhinvali region and Abkhazia.

    EXPLOSION IN TBILISI INSTITUTE OF STABILIZED ISOTOPES DID NOT INCREASE RADIATION

    The Director of the Institute of Stabilized Isotopes of Science Academy of Georgia Tamaz Abzianidze refuted information that allegedly the air was polluted with radioactive materials as a result of the explosion in the building of the Institute. According to him, the Institute personnel works only on the stabilized isotopes, evolved by chemical methods.


    MEASURES ASSUMED FOR COORDINATING HUMANITARIAN ASSISTANCE TO CHECHEN REFUGEES IN GEORGIA

    The interim commission, which will define the type and volume of essential aid, has been created. The commission under the chairmanship of the Minister on Refugees Affairs and Placement Valeri Vashakidze will make decision in 10 days on admitting humanitarian aid in the country, and this will be obligatory for every legal entity and private individual.


    ACADEMIC YEAR IN SCHOOLS OF GEORGIA WILL START ON SEPTEMBER 18

    As the Minister of Education Alexander Kartozia said in his interview by the Georgian TV on August 16, the decision over extension of summer holidays is adopted because of the water deficiency associated with draught. He said that according to the forecast of synoptic weather compilers the dry whether will last in the first half of September and referred to the opinion of the Minister of Health Care, who thinks that in these conditions returning back of a big mass of students and their parents, who are on holidays now, might cause danger of outbreak of different diseases.
