EUROPEAN COMMISSION’S OPINION: DESPITE THE RECENT EVENTS THAT HAVE DAMAGED PROGRESS IN GEORGIA, THE COUNTRY HAS ACHIEVED A GOOD DEGREE OF MACROECONOMIC STABILITY

The European Commission estimates that despite the fact that recent events have damaged Georgia’s progress, the country has achieved a good degree of macroeconomic stability.

GEORGIAN PREMIER: MOST OF RECOMMENDATIONS OF THE EUROPEAN COMMISSION WERE ALREADY IN OUR AGENDA, THERE ARE OTHER ISSUES THAT WILL BE CLARIFIED WITH BRUSSELS

OPPOSITION MP: MOST LOGICAL WOULD BE TO ASSIGN GEORGIA THE STATUS OF EU MEMBERSHIP CANDIDATE WITH ITS CANCELLATION IN CASE OF NON-FULFILLMENT OF OBLIGATIONS

“The most logical would be to assign Georgia the status of a candidate country for EU membership”, stated Roman Gotsiridze, MP from opposition National Movement and ex-president of National Bank of Georgia (NBG, 2005-2007). This should have happened with the condition that “if the obligations are not fulfilled by December, this status will be canceled”, he posted on the social network.

RONDELI FOUNDATION FELLOW: THE MAIN QUESTION IS WHETHER THE COUNTRY IS READY TO FULFILL CONDITIONS OF THE EUROPEAN COMMISSION

Kakha Gogolashvili, senior fellow at Rondeli Foundation (GFSIS), notes that the “European perspective”, given to Georgia, means entering the path of institutional integration into the EU, and one should not worry at all that the status of the EU membership candidate country has not been received immediately.

The main question and concern is “whether the country is ready to fulfill the conditions set by the European Commission”, Gogolashvili pointed.
