    COALITION “FOR INDEPENDENT AND TRANSPARENT JUDICIARY”: DRAFT OF AMENDMENTS TO LAW “ON COMMON COURTS” IS COMPLETELY DIVORCED FROM THE COUNTRY’S REALITY

    Non-governmental coalition For Independent and Transparent Judiciary estimates that draft amendments concerning judges’ appointment in the Supreme Court are fragmentary and are completely divorced from reality in Georgia.

    The matter concerns the draft amendments to the organic law “On Common Courts”, presented by Anri Okhanashvili, chairman of the Parliament’s Committee on Legal Issues.


    IDFI: ACCESSIBILITY OF COURT DECISIONS REMAINS A SERIOUS CHALLENGE

    Referring to results of study of transparency of judicial system in Georgia, Institute for Development of Freedom of Information (IDFI) concludes that accessibility of court decisions remains a serious challenge.

    Incomplete publication of public information by courts and the High Council of Justice is problematic, the organization points.

    SHARE OF TBILISI IN TOTAL NUMBER OF PAWNSHOPS DECREASED BY 9.6 PP

    Sakstat reported that at the end of 2020, there were 193 organizations engaged in pawnshop activity in Georgia (without branches, excluding banks and microfinance organizations), 46.1% which operated in Tbilisi.

    In 2017, there were 875 pawnshop organizations (Georgian statistics service did not indicate this case, if the data is provided without branches), from which Tbilisi accounted for 55.7%.


    “ENGURHES”, STOPPED IN JANUARY, HAS TO RESUME OPERATION IN MAY

    Georgian government announced that the country’s largest hydroelectric station EngurHES will be connected to the country’s common energy net in May. All 5 power units of the station were stopped on January 20 in order to carry out urgent works in the derivation tunnel.


    REHABILITATION OF ROAD SECTION AND CONSTRUCTION OF BRIDGES COMPLETED IN KHONI MUNICIPALITY

    Georgian Roads Department reported about completion of rehabilitation of 10-km road section (Dzedzileti-Gordi-Nogi) and bridges in Khoni municipality (Imereti region).

    The Department noted that works were financed from the state budget, which allocated 16.5 million lari for that end.

    IN 2020, APPLICATIONS TO COMMUNICATIONS CUSTOMER PROTECTION SERVICE INCREASED BY 15%

    Service of Public Defender of Customer Interests, existing under Georgian National Communication Commission, reported that it received 822 applications/complaints in 2020. In 2019, there were 714 applications/complaints (respectively, the number has increased by 15% year-on-year), the Service said.


    INSURANCE COMPANY “PRIME” FINISHED 2020 WITH LOSS

    Insurance company Prime reported loss of 419,002 lari for 2020. In 2019, the company recorded profit of 389,043 lari.
