    RUSSIAN FOREIGN MINISTRY GIVING REASONS FOR POSTPONING NEGOTIATIONS ON THE BORDER DELIMITATION

    As it has been informed at the Georgian embassy in Moscow, according to the note, delivered there on May 29, the Foreign Ministry of Russia explains postponing of negotiations by appearance of the announcements in the press, made by the Georgian officials. They contain new information over Tbilisi’s position on passing the borderline on the Chechen section.


    VISIT OF THE MOSCOW MILITIA CHIEF HAS COME TO AN END

    The acting chief of the Moscow militia Victor Shvidkin has considered the issues over the co-operation development between the two countries’ law machineries in the struggle against the crime. Yesterday, he visited the Tbilisi’s main headquarters of the Interior Ministry and met the Minister Targamadze.


    PARLIAMENT HAS CONFIRMED CANDIDATURES OF 4 MORE MINISTERS AND THE HEAD OF THE CHAMBER OF CONTROL

    At the plenary session of the Parliament today the following candidatures were considered and confirmed: Merab Chkhenkeli – the Minister of Urbanization and Construction (148 deputies voted pro, 14 – against), Mikheil Ukleba – State Property Management Minister (143 voted pro, 26 – against), Valeri Vashakidze – Minister of Refugees Affairs and Settlement (164 voted pro, 10 – against), David Mirtskhulava – Minister of Fuel and Energy (154 – pro, 19 – against). All of them occupied the said posts in the previous government.


    LEVAN GACHECHILADZE AND BONDO JIKIA – CANDIDATURES ON THE POST OF THE MINISTER OF AGRICULTURE

    The Chairman of the Agrarian Committee of the Parliament David Kirvalidze doubts that the President will nominate the former Minster Bakur Gulua on this post for the second time. We’ll remind to you that last week Gulua’s candidature was not confirmed at the plenary session of the Parliament.


    PRESIDENT CONSIDERS IT NECESSARY TO REFORM THE PROSECUTOR’S OFFICE

    Eduard Shevardnadze while congratulating the Prosecutor’s Office employees with the their professional day, noted that the Prosecutor’s Office, “at the expense of great efforts has retained its professional dignity, greatly contributed to the struggle against crime, reinstatement and strengthening of legality”. “This has conditioned our proposal to launch wide scale discussions on the further growth of the role of the Prosecutor’s Office and the reformation of the system generally”, he stressed and expressed his hope that this “very important stage of the reformation” would be successfully overpassed.


    VISIT OF CIS EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE CHAIRMAN STARTING ON MAY 31

    According to the press service of the Georgian Foreign Ministry, the aim of the visit of the Executive Committee Chairman Yuri Yarov – to discuss the organization issues of the meeting of the CIS governments’ heads and foreign ministers. Yarov’s meeting with the Georgia President Shevardnadze is scheduled for June 1, during which they are going to discuss issues connected with the formation of the free trade zone.


    SUKHUMI WELCOMES INTRODUCTION OF THE POST OF SPECIAL ERRANDS MINISTER IN TBILISI

    The aid of the President of the self-proclaimed Republic of Abkhazia Astamur Tanya made this announcement, noting at the same time Sukhumi’s readiness to hod negotiations with the former ambassador of Georgia in Russia Malkhaz Kakabadze, who has been appointed on this post.


    GEORGIAN GUERILLAS GOING TO PROCEED TO ACTIVE MILITARY ACTIVITIES IN ABKHAZIA

    This is the announcement made by Tetri Legioni (White Legion) commander Zurab Samushia, while informing about this decision adopted by the Main Council of the Interim Committee on Abkhazia’s Liberation. Samushia thinks that the leadership of the country is to give evaluation to the activities of Ardzinba’s regime in Abkhazia at last.

    GEORGIANS IN RUSSIA TRANSFER SOME $400M ANNUALLY TO THEIR RELATIVES IN GEORGIA

    This sum is the result of the calculations made by the Budgetary Office of the Parliament. According to the approximate data of the office, up to 400,000 Georgian citizens have gone to Russia lately and 250,000 out of them found full time jobs there.


    30-KM MOTOR-ROAD CONSTRUCTION TO KHODORIHES TO-BE UNDER WAY

    The company McConnell Dowell has become the winner in the tender announced by the AIOC on the rehabilitation of the old oil pipe line’s 185-km section Samgori-Supsa on the Georgian territory. The works will be started from the firstdecade of June and are to be finished by March 2001.

    POLICE LIEUTENANT ACCUSED OF DRUG AND ARMS TRAFFICKING

    According to the information delivered yesterday by the Interior Ministry of Georgia, the policemen in Akhmeta and one more resident of the same region were detained while their attempt to sell heroine a week ago. The press center of the Interior Ministry explains the delay fanning information on their detention by the necessity to take urgent measures on the initiated case.
