    March 17, 2017 - Movement for Freedom – European Georgia comes out with 7-point program, which aims support to small and middle-sized business.

    As representative of the movement Zurab Chiaberashvili declared at the briefing, the program is based on two key principles – tax reduction and government costs cutting.


    REZONANSI: “SHOULD ALIENATION OF AGRICULTURAL LANDS TO FOREIGNERS BE BANNED?”

    March 16, 2017 - The newspaper reports that members of Constitutional Commission have considered issue of agricultural land’s alienation to foreigners once again. However, the Commission members cannot agree, if the land selling should be banned totally or not, the article points.


    REZONANSI: “ISSUE OF SWISS CUSTOMS OFFICERS’ PLACEMENT AT PSOU AND ROKI TO BE DECIDED BY END OF THIS MONTH”

    March 16, 2017 - “Russia has given green light to implementation of the agreement, signed on monitoring of freight turnover at Georgia-Russia border”, the newspaper reports. Now, both parties need to sign contracts with Swiss company SGS, which will implement this monitoring on Abkhaz and Tskhinvali sections of the border.

    March 15, 2017 - “Someone could see right of expression more important, but as for me, I refer more essential that, which will have primary effect on economy”, Economy and Sustainable Development Minister Giorgi Gakharia has declared.

    Supreme Court of Georgia decided on March 2 that Rustavi-2 broadcasting company belongs to businessman Kibar Khalvashi, while European Court suspended enforcement of that decision initially (on March 3) until March 8, while later extended the suspension indefinitely.

    March 14, 2017 - Batumi Mayor Giorgi Ermakov declared that protest action, held in the city on Saturday night, caused damage of 150,000 lari. It has not been decided so far if the loss will be rapid from budget of Batumi or Ajara, he noted.

    March 14, 2017 - Analyst Gia Khukhashvili (former adviser to billionaire ex-premier Bidzina Ivanishvili) estimates that action, held in Batumi on March 10-11 “was not planned by anyone”. “This was a social affect, which was tried to be turned for own favor by all forces”, he said in his interview with the newspaper,

    Khukhashvili points at total unemployment and economic crisis and indicates that “there are very high social risks” in the country.

    March 17, 2017 - Changes, planned within universal healthcare program will apply to almost all citizens, Tabula writes. The article points that planned amendments separate universal healthcare packages of socially unprotected, low-income, medium-income and high-income persons.

    March 15, 2017 - Economy and Sustainable Development Minister Giorgi Gakharia says that budget of “Check-in Georgia” concert program “will be less than last year and with high probability will be reduced”.

    The Minister assures that “It will reduce not due to decreased number of events, but it will reduce because we will make them even more effective”.

    March 13, 2017 - Fuel price in Georgia has raised by 40-60 tetri over the past 4 months, the newspaper reports.

    Paata Bairakhtari, vice-president of Young Financers and Businessmen Association, declares that fuel importer companies work in Georgia with profit, making 35 tetri (per 1 l) on average.

    THE FINANCIAL: ““EXPERTO” UNWRAPS THE PACKAGING INDUSTRY IN GEORGIA”

    March 13, 2017 - Solutions to packaging problems differ from region to region in Georgia and these variations are the result of factors such as economics, the availability or access to packaging materials, infrastructure, distribution systems, climatic conditions and consumer habits, writes the newspaper.

    Referring to consulting company Experto, the article points at widely-spread belief that because of the economies of scale most packaging is either done in the neighboring country – Turkey (and elsewhere), or generally ready-made packaging materials are imported into Georgia.

    NETGAZETI.GE: “MOST FREQUENTLY, COMPLAINTS, SUBMITTED TO TELECOMMUNICATION OMBUDSMAN, REFER TO “SILKNET”, “MAGTI” AND “GEOCELL””

    March 16, 2017 - Service of Telecommunication Ombudsman received 208 complaints during the last year, of which 42 were submitted against SilkNet, 19 – Geocell and 18 – MagtiCom. Out of total complaints, 122 ones were satisfied fully, while 62 – partly.


    KVIRIS PALITRA: “THREAT OF AIR TRAFFIC JAM?”

    March 13, 2017 - Tbilisi International Airport and its Turkish operator company TAV Urban Georgia could not meet current standards or demands and they could fail even more after enactment of visa waiver with EU, the newspaper states.

    For instance, when Turkish company entered Georgian airports’ management, one of Georgian side’s requests was to enhance acceptance rate of Tbilisi International Airport to 1,500 passengers per hour.

    LIBERALI: “HOW WILL ENVIRONMENTAL ASSESSMENT CODE PROTECT ENVIRONMENT”

    March 17, 2017 - Environmental Assessment Code, being considered currently in the Parliament, envisages two lists of activities, instead of current one.

    The first list will include activities, subjected to mandatory environmental impact assessment (EIA), while the second one – those activities, which subjecting to this assessment will require definite prior procedures.


    TABULA: “OMBUDSMAN: TOYS IN GEORGIA ARE DANGEROUS FOR CHILDREN’S HEALTH”

    March 15, 2017 - According to the Ombudsman, Georgian Center for Strategic Research and Development has sent 10 dolls, bought at Tbilisi shops, to accredited laboratory in Germany, which tests toys for safety. The testing showed that out of 10 dolls, 9 ones contain large amount of hazardous substance.

    NETGAZETI.GE: “KUMSISHVILI: WE GOT RESULT OF PORTFOLIO CONVERSION OF $60M DURING THIS PERIOD”

    March 17, 2017 - Finance Minister Dimitri Kumsishvili says that 4,500 families applied to loan conversion program. “Overall, the data need adjustment, but we got result of portfolio conversion of $60 million during this period”, the Minister declares.


    BANKEBI DA FINANSEBI: “THERE IS NO MECHANISM FOR EFFECTIVE REGULATION OF USURY”

    March 16, 2017 - In Georgia, moneylenders, i.e. private mortgagers, often conduct their activity without registration, thus negatively affecting Georgian financial market, the newspaper considers.

    The article points that moneylenders’ rate of interest much exceeds ones, offered by banks and microfinance organizations, but simplicity of borrowing and heavy social background encourage citizens to apply to moneylenders.


    REZONANSI: “FAILURE OF LOAN CONVERSION PROGRAM IS INEVITABLE!”

    March 14, 2017 - Only 4 days remain until completion of loan conversion program, while only 12% of eligible borrowers expressed interest to convert their loans to national currency, the newspaper reports. Out of those 27,000 borrowers, who have mortgage loans in foreign currency, only 3,333 have applied to the program.

    THE FINANCIAL: “EBRD AND FAO HOSTED FIRST CAUCASUS DAIRY CONGRESS IN GEORGIA”

    March 15, 2017 - EBRD and Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO) joined forces to raise standards in Georgia’s dairy sector, the newspaper reports.

    Tbilisi hosts the first Caucasus Dairy Congress, being organized by EBRD and FAO and supported by the Georgian Agriculture Ministry.
