1. EX-PRESIDENT OF NBG: CARGO INSPECTION AT THE BORDER WITH RUSSIA SHOULD BE EXTREMELY TIGHTENED
Politics

Giorgi Kadagidze, president of National Bank of Georgia (NBG) in 2009-2016, considers that selective/full inspection of cargo on the Georgian-Russian border should be extremely tightened, as against the background of the Russia-Ukraine war, Georgia is a country of naturally increased danger.

Kadagidze posted this on social media, explaining: we are a bordering country, we have a visa-free regime with Russia, the number of Russian citizens, who have arrived in Georgia, has increased, as well as the number of companies, registered by them, we have officially stated that we do not join the sanctions against Russia.

2. ADB DEGRADED GEORGIA’S ECONOMIC GROWTH FORECAST FOR 2021
Economics

After double-digit growth in 2021, Georgia’s economic growth in 2022 will slow down to 3.5% because of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, the Asian Development Bank (ADB) says in the resent report.

In the previous forecast, ADB projected growth of Georgia’s economy in 2021 at 6.5%.

3. IN 2021, RATE OF NEGATIVE NATURAL GROWTH OF POPULATION INCREASED IN GEORGIA ALMOST 3.5 TIMES
Society

Sakstat reported that in 2021, a negative natural population increase (a difference between number of born and deceased) was recorded in the country, making up 13,960 in volume. In 2020, this indicator was also negative, making up 4,017 (respectively, increasing in 2021 almost 3.5 times).

4. MAIN PART OF DRAFT LAW “ON WATER RESOURCES MANAGEMENT” TO ENTER IN FORCE IN 2023
Economics

The main part of the draft law “On Water Resources Management” will enter in force on January 1, 2023, the Georgian Parliament reported. Introduction of permits for water use and obligations to pay the corresponding fee are envisaged from January 1, 2024.

5. MINISTRY OF REGIONAL DEVELOPMENT AND INFRASTRUCTURE: IN Q1, PLAN OF INFRASTRUCTURE INVESTMENTS IS OVER-FULFILLED BY 9%
Economics

Georgian Ministry of Regional Development and Infrastructure reported that 406.2 million lari were invested in infrastructure projects in the 1st quarter.

This volume exceeds the plan, envisaged by the state budget, by 9% (by 33.3 million lari), the Ministry declared.

6. REHABILITATION OF METEKHI BRIDGE IN TBILISI TO COST 2M LARI
Economics

Tbilisi Mayor Kakha Kaladze declared that the full rehabilitation of the Metekhi Bridge in the historical center of the city will begin within 10 days. The project costs 2 million lari, he said at the city government meeting today.

7. IN 2021, NET PROFIT OF GEORGIAN INSURANCE COMPANIES DECREASED BY 16.2%

Georgian State Service for Insurance Supervision reported that 18 insurance companies, operating in Georgia, finished 2021 with a net profit of 39.9 million lari. If compared with 2020, the volume has decreased by 16.2%.

8. IN 2021, GEORGIAN FOOD AGENCY HELD 25,621 INSPECTIONS, REVEALING 2,414 OFFENCES
Economics

Georgian National Food Agency reported that 25,621 inspections were carried out in 2021 within the framework of the state control. In total, 2,414 offences have been identified, the Agency said.
