1. CYPRUS AMBASSADOR TO GEORGIA IS ARRIVING IN TBILISI FROM HIS MOSCOW RESIDENCY

   The ambassador of the Republic of Cyprus to Georgia Platon Kiriakides (residency in Moscow) will visit Georgia on August 5-8. 2. US DEFENSE MINISTER IS ARRIVING IN TBILISI

   William Cohen, USA Defense Minister, is arriving in Tbilisi on August 1. The program of the visit includes his meetings with the President of Georgia Eduard Shevardnadze, Chairman of the Parliament Zurab Zhvania and Defense Minister of Georgia David Tevzadze.

3. THE USA GENERAL IMPLEMENTING IN GEORGIA THE PROGRAM ON THE CIVIL CONTROL OF THE COUNTRY’S ARMED FORCES

   The Chairman of the Georgian Parliament Zurab Zhvania met with the representative of the USA’s non-governmental organization National-Democratic Institute on July 22. This organization intends to implement a new program in Georgia, aiming at developing civil relations in the armed forces and assisting to strengthening the civil control on it.

   The Chairman of the Georgian Parliament met with the Chairman of the Parliament of Portugal Antonio de Almeida Santos, who was on an official visit in Tbilisi, yesterday. It was noted during the conversation that Georgia is interested in the Portuguese Parliament's experience in democratic development and switching to the market economy.

5. THE CLOSING CEREMONY OF THE EU TACIS PROJECT ON INSTITUTIONAL STRENGTHENING OF THE GEORGIAN PARLIAMENT HAS BEEN HELD

6. IN RCHEULISHVILI’S OPINION THE ARMED CONFLICT WITH TBILISI IS BREWING IN AJARA

   The leader of Socialist Party Vakhtang Rcheulishvili, who has just returned from Ajara, delivered a speech at the beginning of the Georgian Parliament’s extraordinary session today. He declared that the situation in Ajara is similar to the situation in Abkhazia 7 years ago, that means the armed conflict against Tbilisi is brewing.

7. GREEK DEPUTY DEFENSE MINISTER ARRIVES IN TBILISI

9. BUSINESSMEN SHOW DISCONTENT WITH 60% FUEL EXCISE

   According to Zurab Nutsubidze, First Deputy Director of Saktkhevadgasi JSC, fuel excise introduced in November 1998 caused decrease in liquid gas sales and price leap (from 4-6 Lari to 8-12 Lari for 10 kg of gas). He said that he will raise the question of abolition of the excise next year, since the income from it is already envisaged in budget 1999.

10. ZHVANIA HAD MEETINGS WITH POPE AND STATE MINISTER OF VATICAN

11. RESHUFFLING OF THE PERSONNEL IN THE STATE BORDER PROTECTION DEPARTMENT OF GEORGIA

    The Chairman of the state department on the State Border Protection of Georgia Valeri Chkheidze has visited Akhaltsikhe, where he met with the command and the personnel of the frontier troops, controlling 117 km of the state border. The military council, during which the decision on dismissing Gregory Leziashvili from the post of commander of this brigade was adopted, was held behind the closed doors.

12. NEW INVESTOR FOR MADNEULI?

    According to Zurab Kutelia, Chairman of the interdepartmental commission for natural resources and mining, a governmental commission currently working in Madneuli, is preparing a decree to deprive Madneuli JSC of the mining license on the ground of environment pollution. The Ministry of Environment Protection and Natural Resources is planning to invite new tenders for the license.

13. LABORATORY ANALYSIS CONFIRMED THAT THE OIL LEAKAGE TOOK PLACE AT THE BATUMI OIL REFINERY

    This is the information delivered by the first Deputy Minister of the Environment Protection and Natural Resources Zurab Tavartkiladze, commenting on the results of the governmental commission on the discovering of the oil traces at the coast of Supsa. The expertise conducted by the Institute of the Physics and Organic Chemistry showed that oil contained 0.5% of brimstone, that is characteristic of the Batumi oil factory.

14. THE WORK OF THE GEORGIAN PARLIAMENT’S SPRING SESSION CAME TO AN END

    The Сhairman of the Parliament Zurab Zhvania declared about the closing of the country’s main legislative body’s session at 10:40 p.m. on June 25. 15. THE PARLIAMENT MADE A DECISION TO FORM THE COMMISSION ON THE RESEARCH OF 1991-1992 EVENTS

    As it is known it has been several years already that the opposition organizations, in the first place so called “Zviadist” organizations demand to give the political estimation to the events of winter of 1991-1992 years in Tbilisi, when as a result of the armed clashes the President Zviad Gamsakhurdia was overthrown.

    The Chairman of the Parliament Zurab Zhvania stressed the special importance of this decision, noting however that it is possible the commission will operate at the newly formed Parliament.
