    ABKHAZIA BELIEVES THAT GEORGIAN GOVERNMENT WILL EXTEND RUSSIAN PEACEKEEPING MANDATE

    This information comes from the President Aid of the self-proclaimed Republic of Abkhazia Astamur Tania. In his opinion, Georgian side is not ready for a war with Abkhazia which is inevitable in case Russian peacekeeping forces leave the area.


    THE SITUATION IN GALI REGION HAS GROWN TENSE

    At the 4-lateral meeting for Abkhazian conflict settlement in Chuburkhinji on August 26 Abkhazian representatives denied the fact of curfew imposition in Gali region. Nonetheless, according to Sergei Korobko, the Commander-in-Chief of Russian peace-keeping forces, the situation in Gali region villages has grown tense, clashes between the armed guerrillas and peaceful habitants became more frequent.


    RUSSIAN FOREIGN MINISTRY ENVOY TO GEORGIA CONSIDERS PRESIDENTIAL ELECTIONS IN ABKHAZIA ILLEGITIMATE

    In the opinion of the Russian Foreign Ministry envoy to Georgia Lev Mironov, the presidential elections in Abkhazia scheduled for October 3 are illegitimate, for most of the local population had left their homes during the conflict and is now unable to take part in the elections. Abkhazian authorities have no constitutional right for such elections, he said.

    As the President– s press-secretary declared today, Eduard Shevardnadze considers it inadmissible to use the fund or its any kind of affiliation connected with his name, for achievement of the political ambitions and breaks all the contacts with them. The press secretary declared “Shevardnadze– s Fund has been put-up by its founders as the non-political organization, contributing to the process of building the democratic society in Georgia” as an answer to the question if Shevardnadze could name the person in question and if he meant by that Zviad Tsetskhladze.

    GOVERNMENT WILL CONSIDER THE ISSUE OF INTRODUCING A PREVENTIVE TAX FOR CURRENCY EXCHANGE OUTLETS

    The decision to put the issue on the agenda of the next government session was taken on August 26 at the session of the Emergency Commission for budget intakes mobilization. According to the Deputy State Minister Vano Chkhartishvili, 447 currency exchange outlets are currently functioning in Georgia under the NB license, 285 of them are located in Tbilisi.
