    According to Zurab Mgaloblishvili, head of the financial-economic management, the bank Abreshumis Gza (Silk Road) provides all types of bank operations but gives preference to crediting leasing.

    The bank grants credits under 18-22% for one to three years.

  3. SAKSTANDARTI SUGGEST TOUGHENING MEASURES AGAINST ADULTERATION OF FOODSTUFF

    Badri Shoshitaishvili, the Sakstandarti (standardization service) head, on January 16 introduced to the government session the bill calling for more efficient measures for fighting adulteration of foodstuff.

    The market is not secured from products dangerous for people, which is facilitated by almost uncontrollable street trade, he said.

  4. CONSIDERATION OF THE BUDGET-2002 POSTPONED TO JANUARY 17

    After Avtandil Jorbenadze, the State Minister, reported on the budget-2002 parameters a bureau of the Parliament postponed the consideration to the following day as MPs had not a chance to get acquainted with the final version until today.

    The State Minister said the process of agreeing parameters with factions had lasted until late night and MPs’ demands had been met as far as possible.

  5. SOCIALISTS BRING FORWARD SUGGESTIONS ON DRAFT BUDGET-2002

    At today’s press conference, Socialist faction leader Irakli Mindeli presented two bills, concerning the budget system. One of the documents envisages creation of National Agency on Reconstruction and Development branches with the purpose of backing from the budget.

  7. GOVERNMENT STARTS PREPARING NEW TAX CODE

    At a conference held with Georgian President today members of the commission working on a new Tax Code put forward their proposals and expressed their opinion. According to Zurab Nogaideli, the Finance Minister, the commission will have to choose either to liberalize the tax system and to shift to insurance principles or to gradually improve and increase the managements quality.

  8. MPS DO NOT LIKE PRESIDENT’S PLANS TO EXTEND RUSSIAN PEACEKEEPERS’ MANDATE

    The Parliament made a conclusion on the necessity to withdraw Russian peacekeepers from Abkhazia and appealed to Georgian President to make an appropriate decision as long as ago as October 2001. However, in a traditional radio interview yesterday, President said he was for the extension of the peacekeepers’ mandate.

  9. FACTION ALLIANCE FOR NEW GEORGIA DISSATISFIED WITH TAX REVENUES MINISTER

    Irakli Gogava, the faction leader, said today he had been under the impression after meeting with government yesterday that state had a “strong State Minister” (Avtandil Jorbenadze) and a “week Tax Revenues Minister” (Levan Dzneladze). Gogava said the Minister had been unable to respond questions regarding the possibility of an increase in tax revenues.

  10. INDUSTRIALISTS FOCUS ON CREDITS

  12. GUUAM NATIONAL COORDINATORS TO MEET IN TBILISI

    Coordinators of GUUAM member-states (Georgia, Ukraine, Uzbekistan, Azerbaijan and Moldova) are due to meet in the third decade of January. Zurab Beridze, national coordinator of the country, a representative of the Georgian Foreign Ministry, will be in charge of the Georgian delegation.

  13. PARLIAMENT AND GOVERNMENT CONTINUE WORK ON DRAFT BUDGET-2002

    Today the State Minister, the economic bloc Ministers and the heads of Parliamentary factions and committees had a closed-door discussion of the budget-2002 parameters, the ratification of which the Parliament decided to postpone until next year the day before.

    It was settled, in the days to come the positions of the parties will be summarized and roughly by January 5 the renewed document is to be introduced to the Government.

  17. CIGARETTE AND ALCOHOL ADVERTISEMENT IN THE MASS MEDIA IS ALLOWED UNTIL MAY 2003

    Although the law on advertisement envisaged prohibition of cigarette and alcoholic drinks in the mass media from the coming year, according to the Parliament decision, the start of the prohibition process is postponed until May 2003. Instead, with consideration of the experiences of the western countries, the Parliament promised to develop the bill on the tobacco control.
