    Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili spoke today before government meeting about price rises in the country. Increased prices for some articles of food (grain, flour, sugar) are conditioned by objective factors (worldwide growth of prices), as well as subjective ones, the President considered.

    National Bank of Georgia (NBG) calls statements, made on its activity recently, as “a campaign against NBG”, noting that it would lead to banking sector development obstruction, as well as to macroeconomic instability and would cause negative impact on the country image.

    The NBG’s reaction followed Zurab Tkemaladze’s (chairman of Industrialists fraction) statement, made on finance-budgetary committee meeting last week.

  7. ILLEGAL INCOME LEGALIZATION SUPPRESSION MECHANISMS TO BE IMPROVED

    Fiscal Committee of the Parliament supported today amendments in laws “On Support to Suppression of Illegal Income Legalization” and “On National Bank of Georgia” as well as in Criminal Code.

    According to the amendments, Georgian Financial Monitoring Service supervises solely the activity of the entities, which carry out monitoring.

  8. FITCH RATINGS ASSIGNED RATINGS TO BAZISBANK FOR THE FIRST TIME

    Bazisbank announced that it was assigned ratings from Fitch Ratings for the first time.  Namely: a long-term issuer default rating (IDR) of “CCC” with a stable outlook, short-term IDR of “C”, individual rating of “D/E”, support rating of “5” and support rating floor of “No Floor”.

    According to Fitch, the IDRs and Individual rating reflect Bazisbank’s small size and franchise, as well as Georgia’s still relatively high-risk operating environment.

  9. IN TERMS OF PRESIDENT PROGRAM ONE-TIME AID TO BE RENDERED TO 700,000 RURAL FAMILIES

    Within the president-initiated program, 700,000 rural families will get 50 kg of flour each, Prime-Minister Zurab Nogaideli has declared after the government meeting today.

    That aid is supplementary to the earlier announced one, scoping gas and power vouchers distribution.

    Armenia should set certain priorities, aiming to liberalize economic cooperation with Georgia. Priorities scope customs procedure simplification and checkpoints accelerated upgrading, as well as removing restrictions on direct and transit transportations between two countries, introducing preferential tax treatment and “open sky” policy (resuming Yerevan-Tbilisi-Batumi flight).

  11. Rezonansi: “THERE WILL BE NO AZERI GAS FROM TOMORROW”

    Azerbaijani information agency Trend, referring to the Azeritransgas management, reported that Azerbaijan will cease gas supply to Georgia through the old gas pipeline since October 12, because of the contract term expiration.  However, the gas supplies from the Azeri gas field Shakh-Deniz (1 million cubic m per day) and 10% of transit volume to Armenia remain.

    The main problem of the Azeri gas supply is its tariff.  Until now, Georgia received daily 1.5 million cubic m through the old pipeline at $120 per 1,000 cubic m.  Now the talks are about $150-160.

  12. 24 Saati: “RICH HARVEST TURNS INTO A PROBLEM”

    Current year a rich harvest of apples is expected in the Samtskhe-Javakheti region.  However, fruit receiving centers and canneries are not operating in the region for a long time, therefore the peasants have difficulties in harvest realization.

    The only fruit-receiving center is functioning in Gori (Shida Kartli region).  However, peasants consider that it is unprofitable to sell fruits there, because the proceeds do not cover the transportation expenses.  That is why many peasants start to cut down the orchards and sow cereals.

    Niko Lekishvili, head of the committee on branch economy and economic policy, notes that the Council work will be efficient, if it has the efficient staff.

  14. AGREEMENT ON ODESSA-BRODY-PLOCK-GDANSK OIL PIPELINE IS SIGNED

    As the Foreign Ministry informs, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Lithuania, Poland and Ukraine signed the cooperation agreement on the Energy Security Conference held in Vilnius. Namely, the sides agreed on creation of Odessa-Brody-Plock-Gdansk oil pipeline, which will provide oil on world markets.

  15. POWER AND GAS VOUCHERS TO BE DISTRIBUTED IN TBILISI

    Prime Minister Zurab Nogaideli has announced after government meeting today that distribution of power and gas vouchers will begin next week in Tbilisi. The vouchers, having value of 50 lari, are envisaged for recovery of energy cost for pensioners, deprived families and teachers, and will be distributed countrywide within state budget’s allotment of 120 million lari.

    This year we are not planning to buy black grapes from the peasants, because we have yielded an enough harvest on our own vineyards, says Zurab Ramazashvili, the company’s supervisory board chairman.

    Transparency International Georgia recommends Georgian government to envisage results of inefficient employment program of 2006, and to pay attention to “proper design and transparency increase”, while develop program-2007.

    Experts point at lack of program performance evaluation mechanism, incompatibility of its key goals with plans on long-term employment assistance, wrong planning of relations with business circles.
