    KOFI ANNAN CONFIDENT GEORGIAN DELEGATION AT 55TH UN SESSION WILL HEAD EDUARD SHEVARDNADZE

    This is said in the letter of UN Secretary General Kofi Annan, sent to the President of Georgia. As it puts it, UN’s 55th session scheduled for September 6, 2000 is announced as the Assembly Of Millenium.


    QUESTION CONCERNING REALIZATION OF DECREE ON LIFTING RESTRICTIONS FROM ABKHAZ PART OF BORDER WILL BE SOLVED IN ONE MONTH

    This is the information delivered by the deputy director of the Federal Frontier Service (FFS) of Russia Alexander Yeremin. In his words, the head of FFS Konstantin Totsky has signed the decree on lifting restrictions and work in a new regime with a head of the North Caucasian bureau Eugenie Balkhovitin.


    SITUATION ON CHECHEN PART OF BORDER UNDER CONTROL

    This is the information delivered by the Chairman of the State Borderguard Department Valeri Chkheidze, who together with Deputy Security Minister Levan Kenchadze visited Pankisi Canyon, located in Akhmeta region, bordering Chechnya. In Chkheidze’s words, the border is crossed by refugees daily, most of them going to Azerbaijan and Turkey.


    GOVERNMENT CONSIDERED NEW PROVISION OF STATE DEPARTMENT OF GEOLOGY

    The Chairman of the Geology Department Tamaz Janelidze presented the draft of a new provision at the regular session of the government today. The document defining a sphere of the Department’s activities, its main tasks and functions, rights and duties, considerably differs from the current one, adopted 3 years ago.

    GEORGIA PLENIPOTENTIARY MEMBER OF WTO

    The signing ceremony of the agreement between Georgia and WTO was conducted in Geneva, at the headquarters of the organization, today. The head of WTO Michael Moore and State Minister of Georgia Vazha Lortkipanidze signed the agreement.


    LEASE OF LANDS IN GOVERNMENT OWNERSHIP CONTINUING

    This is question was considered today at the regular session of the government. As the Minister of Agriculture and Food Bakur Gulua declared, after adoption of the law and the appropriate presidential decree, the local autonomies have carried out measures for speeding up the temps of land leasing.


    NO APPLICANTS FOR TENDER ON PRIVATIZATION OF JSC KIMBOCHKO’S CONTROLLING INTEREST

    As the State Property Management Minister declared at the press conference today, that the tender will be announced again, but the price will be reduced twice. He noted that by IMF demand the privatization of JSC Kimbochko (Chemical Fiber) is to be finished by February 2000.

    AJARIAN AUTHORITIES NOT PERFORMING PRESIDENTIAL DECREE ON PARDON

    According to the vice Prosecutor General Anzor Baluashvili, 28 prisoners pardoned, serving their term in Ajara prisons, have not been released yet, in spite of the decree signed by the president on October 1. In Baluashvili’s words, the Presidential decree on pardon was transferred to the Ajarian authorities as early as on Saturday and its non-fulfillment should be appraised as unlawful and anti constitutional.


    CRIMINAL CONDITION IN CAPITAL

    As the Tbilisi Public Prosecutor Nugzar Gabrichidze declared, 60 willful murders have been committed this year. 14 of them have been committed by the relatives and neighbors of victims.
