    GOVERNMENTAL COMMISSION OF ABKHAZIAN AUTONOMOUS REPUBLIC MET TO DISCUSS PROBLEMS RELATED TO KODORI PASS

    Mr. Zurab Erkvania, the Head of the Council of Ministers led the yesterday’s meeting. The participants pointed out that aerial contact with The Pass had been restored and local population was supplied necessary products.


    YESTERDAY GEORGIAN PRESIDENT RECEIVED CREDENTIALS OF NEW TURKISH AMBASSADOR

    Mr. Shevardnadze expressed his confidence that Mr. Ahmed-Berik Gyursel would foster development of Georgian-Turkish relations, the progress of which had been overly dynamic over the past period.


    FUTURE DEVELOPMENT OF GEORGIA-GERMANY MULTILATERAL RELATIONS WAS DISCUSSED ON THE MEETING OF GEORGIAN PRESIDENT AND ECONOMIC COMMISSION OF GERMAN PARLIAMENT

    During the yesterday meeting, Georgian president noted that after declaring independence, Georgia-Germany friendship was transformed into close and multilateral contact. Germany rendered valuable support to Georgia in development of national economy.


    BSEC WILL BE TRANSFORMED

    Mr. Michael Ukleba, first deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs thinks that considering the problems facing BSEC, the organization should be transformed. According to Mr. Ukleba, this perception is shared by other member-countries.


    NEW PRESIDENT OF THE NATIONAL BANK BECAME IMF MANAGER FROM GEORGIAN SIDE

    Based on presidential ordinance, Mr. Irakli Managadze was appointed a manager of IMF. Mr. Managadze was recently approved by the Parliament as the President of the National Bank of Georgia.

    EVERY YEAR AIR TRANSPORT OF GEORGIA FLIES 270,000 PASSENGERS TO 31 DIRECTIONS

    Mr. Jemal Margveladze, the head of Department of Air Transport, released this information at the Ministry of Transport press conference touching upon the problems and perspectives of the sector. According to Mr. Margveladze, several new flights have been added, such as to Peking, Dubai, Alma-Ata and Vilnius.


    PLAN ON RESTRUCTURING COAL INDUSTRY PRESENTED BY A GOVERNMENTAL COMMISSION WAS APPROVED

    According to Presidential ordinance approving the restructuring plan, Ministry of Finance shall ensure allocation of 300,000 Lari lump sum to Georgian Coal for purchasing mine equipment, necessary supplies and materials by May 1, 1998. Ministry of Finance shall also draft report on advantages of restructuring Tbilisi Coal debt while in the period of coal industry rehabilitation (1991-2001).

    RESULTS OF CHIATURMANGANUM (CHIATURA MANGANESE) CONTROL INTEREST TENDER WERE ANNOUNCED

    According to Ministry of State Property Management, controlling interest (75%) was won by Russian JSC Industria, Ekaterinburgh, which is one of the founders of JSC Russian manganese. This organization was the only candidate.


    ARAB COMPANY EXPRESSED AN INTEREST IN ENERGY SECTOR OF GEORGIA

    According to the meeting of president of United Arab Emirates multipurpose company Avazi-Gargashi and State Minister of Georgia, Georgia does have large potential for realization of energy related programs. The Arab Company has partners in Europe, USA, and implements its energy projects in Bangladesh, Pakistan, China and Arab countries.

    PRESIDENT ASSIGNED LAW ENFORCEMENT AGENCIES TO SUPPORT OMBUDSMAN

    In his special regulation to the prosecutors’ office, Ministries of Foreign Affairs, State Security, Defense and Department of State Border Protection, Mr. President asked them to render active support to Ombudsman Department. Local governments are assigned to foster the activities of the department on sites.


    HEAD OF THE HUMAN RIGHTS PROTECTION ASSOCIATION STARTED HUNGER-STRIKE

    The purpose of Mr. Giorgi Kervalishivili’s one-day hunger strike is to make Georgian government satisfy the request on holding a large meeting at the former Parliament building tomorrow. The meeting will be held in memory of April 9, 1989 events, when Soviet Army brutally attacked the peaceful participants of mass meeting supporting Georgian Independence.


    CULTURAL REVIVAL COUNCIL WAS ESTABLISHED IN GEORGIA

    Formation of the Council was based on a presidential regulation with the participation of Committee on Saving Georgian Culture, Trustee Council of State Program on Protecting Cultural Heritage of Georgia and Council of Experts. The head of the Council is Mr. Shevardnadze.


    ESTABLISHMENT OF FUND OF CAR ACCIDENT VICTIMS

    The Fund was formed in accordance with Presidential Ordinance and in cooperation with State Insurance Observation Agency. The chairperson of the fund is head of the Agency Mr. Archil Tsertsvadze.
