    STRASBOURG COURT: PRE-TRIAL DETENTION OF THE FORMER PRIME MINISTER OF GEORGIA WAS USED AS MEANS OF PRESSURE UPON HIM

    European Court of Human Rights published today decision of Grand Chamber, according to which originally reasonable pre-trial detention of the former prime minister of Georgia Vano Merabishvili was unfairly used as means of pressure upon him later.

    The Chamber ruled (9 votes pro and 8 – contra) that Georgian government has to pay 4,000 EUR in compensation of non-material damage to Merabishvili.


    ABOUT 2,000 DELEGATES FROM MORE THAN 60 COUNTRIES TAKE PART IN TBILISI SILK ROAD FORUM

    Today, 2-day Silk Road Forum (November 28-29) was opened in Tbilisi, which gathers, according to organizers, 34 official delegations and up to 2,000 delegates from more than 60 countries.

    “Georgia is ready to contribute its share in development of so-called middle corridor of New Silk Road”, Georgia’s Prime Minister Giorgi Kvirikashvili declared in his address to participants.


    AGREEMENT ON FREE TRADE BETWEEN GEORGIA AND CHINA TO ENTER IN FORCE ON JANUARY 1

    Georgia’s First Deputy Premier Dimitri Kumsishvili said that agreement on free trade between Georgia and China will enter in force on January 1, 2018.

    Kumsishvili declared this after meeting with China’s Deputy Minister of Commerce Qian Keming, which was held within Tbilisi Silk Road Forum today.


    GEORGIA AND CHINA TO COOPERATE IN DEVELOPMENT OF ECONOMIC ZONES AND ASSISTANCE TO ENTERPRISE CAPACITIES

    Georgia and China signed today memorandum of understanding on cooperation in development of economic zones and assistance to enterprise capacities. The document was signed within Tbilisi Silk Road Forum by Georgia’s First Deputy Prime Minister Dimitri Kumsishvili and China’s Deputy Minister of Commerce Qian Keming.


    HEAD OF EUROPEAN DIRECTORATE FOR MOBILITY AND TRANSPORT: GEORGIA AND THE EU ARE VERY IMPORTANT PARTNERS IN TRANSPORT SECTOR

    “Georgia and the EU are very important partners in transport sector”, head of European Commission’s Directorate-General for Mobility and Transport Henrik Hololei stated.

    Hololei declared this, while addressing to Tbilisi Silk Road Forum today, and noted that Georgia “is the country, which plays role of natural gate in the region and connects transport hubs of Europe and Asia”.


    EBRD VICE-PRESIDENT: GEORGIA IS THE LEADER OF THE SECOND WAVE OF REFORMS IN EASTERN AND CENTRAL EUROPE

    Vice-president of EBRD Alain Pilloux estimates that “Georgia is the leader of the second wave of reforms in Eastern and Central Europe”.

    Pilloux declared this, while addressing to Tbilisi Silk Road Forum, and noted that EBRD supports the context, envisaged by the Silk Road initiative.

    EBRD REGIONAL DIRECTOR: IN GEORGIA, WE CREATED 394 MW OF WATER POWER

    Bruno Balvanera, EBRD director for the South Caucasus, Moldova and Ukraine, declared that “in Georgia, we created 394 MW of water power”.

    The projects include such hydroelectric stations as Enguri, Acharistskali and Paravani, while we work now on the project of NenskraHES, which will be “the largest hydro-construction in the region”, Balvanera said and noted: “The matter concerns investments of billions of dollars”.


    DEPUTY ENERGY MINISTER: WE AIM TO TURN GEORGIA INTO REGIONAL HUB OF TRADE WITH ELECTRICITY

    “Our goal is that Georgia to become regional hub of trade with electricity, while this is impossible without support”, Georgia’s Deputy Energy Minister Giorgi Chikovani declared. “On this way, we rely on support of our partners”, he noted.


    GEORGIAN GOVERNMENT: OAE SHEIKH DOUBLES VOLUME OF INVESTMENTS

    Georgian government reported that United Arab Emirates’ state minister for tolerance issues, Sheikh Nahayan bin Mubarak al Nahayan doubles volume of investments in Georgia.

    As administration of the government said, Sheikh Nahayan declared this at the meeting with Georgia’s Prime Minister Giorgi Kvirikashvili, which held in Tbilisi today.


    170TH ANNIVERSARY OF GEORGIAN TEA WAS CELEBRATED IN TBILISI

    Yesterday, Tbilisi hosted the event, dedicated to the 170th anniversary of tea growing in Georgian, which was organized by Georgian Partnership Fund, Georgian Organic Tea Producers Association and Georgian Tea Producers Association.

    Part in the event was taken by international and local companies, operating in this sphere, Chinese ambassador in Georgia and other persons.


    UPDATED GUIDE TO STATISTICAL INFORMATION SYSTEM OF NBG IS PUBLISHED

    National Bank of Georgia (NBG) reported about publication of the second updated guidebook on SEBSTAT (NBGSTAT, statistical information system of NBG). The first edition was published in 2015.
