  1. ECONOMIC REFORMS RESULTED IN GEORGIA QUITE PROMPTLY

    Simeon Djankov, the author of “Doing Business 2008” report, thinks that “Georgia is the only country where reforms, carried out in the field of economic growth and investment attraction, resulted quite promptly”.

    Generally, lag between reforms and their results is 3-5 years, sometimes even more, Djankov notes, bringing example of Estonia, where reforms were effected in 1994-1997, while the economic promotion was fixed since 2004.

  2. REPEATED AUCTION ON GEORGIAN AIRLINES’ AIRCRAFTS FAILED AGAIN

    Repeated auction, announced by the bankruptcy manager of LLC Georgian Airlines for two aircrafts of the company (Tu-154 and Yak-40), has failed again. This time starting price was $375,000 instead of $750,000 on a previous auction.

  3. PRICE OF AZERI GAS IS NOT DEFINED YET

    Aleko Khetaguri, Energy Minister, did not specify either the possible cost of Azeri natural gas or the expected date of negotiations’ completion. The only things, the Minister have noted, was that population of Georgia will not have any problems with gas supply and the tariff on gas will not change.

  4. Rezonansi: “OKRUASHVILI: PRESIDENT ORDERED ME TO KILL PATARKATSISHVILI”

    Irakli Okruashvili, ex-minister of defense, says that the president Mikheil Saakashvili ordered him earlier to kill businessman Badri Patarkatsishvili, who is considered by the president as the main danger.  Beating of the businessman Valeri Gelashvili also was implemented by the president’s order, the ex-minister declared in live program of TV company Imedi.

    As about circumstances of the death of Prime Minister Zurab Zhvania, Okruashvili said that he does not possess the information on murder.  However, he mentioned that the dead body of the prime minister was moved to the flat, where he was later found.

  5. GNERC SET LIMITING TARIFF FOR GAS DISTRIBUTING COMPANIES

    Georgian National Energy Regulating Company (GNERC) has made decision to introduce upper limiting tariff for gas distributing companies today.

    At the same time, GNERC decided to deregulate relations between gas importer companies and direct consumers, i.e. tariff for such consumers will be set without GNERC’s participation.

  6. Rezonansi: “PRESIDENT WILL SELL LANDS SINGLE-HANDEDLY”

    According to the parliamentary secretary of the government Gia Khuroshvili, the government accepted changes in the law “On Privatization of State-Owned Agricultural Lands”. The document will be submitted for consideration of the Parliament soon.

  7. FISCAL COMMITTEE DID NOT SUPPORTED INDUSTRIALISTS’ INITIATIVE

    Fiscal committee of the Parliament refused to consider amendments to Tax Code, drafted by Zurab Tkemaladze, the Industrialists chairman. Irakli Kovzanadze, the committee chairman, said that the amendments, envisaging to exempt owners of up to 5 ha agriculture plots from land tax would impose “considerable damage to budget”.

  8. INDUSTRIALISTS OFFER TO EXEMPT ALIENATION OF SHARE IN CHARTERED CAPITAL FROM VAT

    Zurab Tkemaladze, Industrialists fraction chairman, initiated amendments to Tax Code, envisaging exemption alienation of shares in chartered capital from VAT.

    Acting Code envisages exempting certain activities from VAT, among them are delivery and/or import of securities and national and foreign currency (excepted numismatic).

  9. 24 Saati: “GAS SUPPLY STILL REMAINS PROBLEM FOR GEORGIA”

    Gas storage bears huge importance for energy security of Georgia, but the project would not implement. According to unconfirmed information, Prime Minister Zurab Nogaideli has found the investor for the project in Kuwait.

  10. THE GOVERNMENT TO FUND BRANDY ALCOHOL PRODUCTION WITH 5M LARI CREDIT

    Finance Ministry will issue soft credit of 5 million lari from its allocations to the companies, producing brandy alcohol, Zurab Nogaideli, Georgian Prime Minister, said. Credit allotment is envisaged by the state program Rtveli-2007, which will be approved in near future, he noted.

    The participants of “Select Georgia” conference, held in Tbilisi today, noted the US investment growth in Georgia for the last period.     Chalagashvili, 30, graduated from law faculty of Georgian Technical University in 1999.

    In opinion of Vakhtang Khmaladze, an expert on legal issues, situation around management replacement in National Bank of Georgia (NBG) bears testimony to “fictitious independence” of NBG.

    The expert mentions in his interview to the newspaper that Prime Minister Zurab Nogaideli has declared quite confidently about replacement of Roman Gotsiridze, who has resigned, with Aleksi Aleksishvili, Finance Minister, in the office of NBG’s president.

    Zurab Janjgava was appointed today as director general of LLC Oil and Gas Corporation of Georgia. He held the same position in Georgian Gas Transporting Company (subsidiary of the Corporation) from December 2006, up to present.

  16. CANDIDATES FOR MINISTER’S POSITION SPEAK ABOUT KEEPING UNDERGOING REFORMS

    Reforms, undergoing in Finance Ministry, will be kept and revenue service forming will be completed, Nika Gilauri, former Energy Minister and the current candidate for a position of Finance Minister, said today, while addressing to fiscal committee of the Parliament. With that, Gilauri has mentioned “small problems” in Finance Ministry, however, has not specified them.

  19. BANK OF GEORGIA PAID 11.4M LARI FOR CASCADE BANK GEORGIA

    Bank of Georgia, which became the beneficiary owner of Cascade Bank Georgia since the beginning of July, informs that it paid 11.4 million lari for 100% of shares.

    Cascade Bank Georgia will be renamed as Galt&Taggart Bank, re-branding process will be finished in October, the new owner says.

  20. AGRICULTURAL LANDS TO SOLD FOR FACTORY-FARM ENTERPRISES’ ESTABLISHMENT

    Georgian government intends to alienate agricultural land plots, aiming creation there of factory-farm enterprises. Zurab Nogaideli, Prime Minister, stated that the initial stage envisages selecting about 100 land lots, while investors will be revealed through competition – depending to business-plan and amount of proposed investment.
