CITIZENS’ UNION ANNOUNCEMENT RAISES CONCERN IN THE OPPOSITION

Georgian President said in a radio interview today he did not agree to a decision of the Citizens’ Union (CU) organization committee to declare the party opposition on March 8. Only the congress of the party has the authority to make such a decision, he said.

GEORGIA’S DEBT TO THE USA PARTIALLY RESTRUCTURED

An agreement on consolidation and restructuring of Georgia’s debt to the USA was signed by the Finance Minister Zurab Nogaideli and the USA acting ambassador to Georgia Philip Remler at the Finance Ministry today. $765,710 of the $20 million credit (allocated by the USA to Georgia under the 1997 agreement) is subject to restructuring.

Georgia has actually managed to win consent of all state-creditors with the exception of Turkmenistan, which refuses to restructure debt. Zurab Nogaideli, the Finance Minister offers not to service the debt of $324.9 million to Turkmenistan, and to meet liabilities toward those states only that agreed on the restructuring under the decision of the Paris Club of creditors.
