    Tbilisi Mayor’s Office has reported at a special briefing today that capital’s Premier Giorgi Bregadze is living the office and named Temur Kurkhuli, current vice-mayor, as his successor. Bregadze has been premier since April 2004 and will take a new office in a few days.

  2. ENACTMENT OF A NEW TAX CODE MAY BE DELAYED

    It is not ruled out that a new Tax Code will come into force after 1-2 months, rather than January 1, 2005 as scheduled earlier. Moreover, the planned reduction in VAT from 20% to 18% (from 2005) may be postponed approximately by 6 months, Roman Gotsiridze, head of the Financial and Budgetary Committee, informed today journalists about the initiative the government made yesterday.

    In 2005, Georgia plans to open eight new embassies, including five so-called mobiles, Georgian Foreign Minister Salome Zurabishvili told journalists today. In particular, it is planned to open an embassy in China and a diplomatic representation in Japan.

  8. GOVERNMENT HOPES TO RECEIVE 200M LARI FROM THE PRIVATIZATION OF STATE PROPERTY NEXT YEAR

    Under the parameters of the budget-2005, 200 million lari will come from the privatization of state property.     Increased parameters of budget-2004, raised due to exceeding budget revenues by 100 million lari, will be introduced to Parliament in a few days, Finance Minister Zurab Nogaideli has told a government meeting today.

    According to the latest data of the Finance Ministry, in January-November of 2004, tax revenues made up around 792.35 million lari, or 7% over the projected parameters.

  14. GEORGIA FACES PROBLEM DUE TO SHUTTING DOWN OF TRACECA NATIONAL SECRETARIAT

    The State Minister on European Integration, Tamar Beruchashvili has proposed to restore the TRACECA (the Europe-Caucasus-Asia transport corridor) national secretariat. The body was closed down on November 1, 2004 under the decree of the country’s President.

  15. GEORGIAN AND ITALIAN BUSINESS CIRCLES DISCUSS COOPERATION PROSPECTS

    A two-day business-conference, organized by the Italian embassy in Georgia and the Georgian Commerce and Industrial Chamber, opened today in Tbilisi. Government officials and representatives of business of the two countries have participated in the conference.

  17. NO CONSENSUS REACHED YET ON BILLS “ON LEGALIZATION OF HIDDEN TAX LIABILITIES AND PROPERTY” AND “ON AMNESTY”

    The Juridical Committee has demanded that the consideration of the bills “On Legalization of Hidden Tax Liabilities” and “On Amnesty” should be postponed at a plenary session of Parliament today. The reason is, according to the committee, that the bills introduced by the government fail to reflect the points negotiated earlier during the consideration of the documents.

  18. RAO EES READY TO INCREASE POWER SUPPLY IN WINTER

    Andrei Rappoport, vice-chairman of the board of directors of RAO EES of Russia, who is visiting Tbilisi on a one-day visit, has told journalists the company may increase the power supply to Georgia by 100-150 mW. Today he met with Prime Minister Zurab Zhvania and Energy Minister Nika Gilauri.

    The Financial and Budgetary Committee of Parliament has reviewed today the final version of the bill “On Legalization of Hidden Tax Liabilities and Property”, under which the legalization will not cover top government officials and would expand to middle ones only.

    Roman Gotsiridze, head of the committee, said the version had been negotiated with Prime Minister Zurab Zhvania yesterday.
