  3. POWER ENGINEERS LOOKING FOR WAYS TO DEAL WITH ELECTRICITY SHORTAGE

    Representative of the Ministry of Fuel and Energy, energy distribution companies and USAID met today at State Minister Zurab Zhvania’s office to consider energy problems.

    Due to electricity shortage the electricity supplies are cut to districts of the capital for two-three hours a day; regions have electricity only for several hours.

  4. 3M OF US AID TO COVER WAGE ARREARS OF THE GEORGIAN MILITARY

    The US has disbursed $3 million for wages of the Georgian servicemen that participated in the Georgian-American Train and Equip program. The funds have been disbursed from the US aid of $21 million to Georgia.

  5. NEW HEAD OF RAILWAY TO BE NAMED THIS WEEK

    The supervisory board of LLC Georgian Railway will meet on January 15 to decide on the candidature of director general.

    According to the press service of the LLC, director general will become one of the two candidates - Tengiz Donadze and Ramaz Giorgadze, deputies of Akaki Chkhaidze, who held the post until November developments.

  6. RAILWAY STILL WITHOUT MANAGEMENT

    Gia Lezhava, elected by the supervisory board of LLC Georgian Railway on December 28, 2003, has refused to take the post. He says conflict of interests, warning against which has been voiced by State Minister Zurab Zhvania, can appear due to his business activities.

  8. BP ANNOUNCES $1 MILLION CONTRIBUTION TO GEORGIA FOR WINTER ENERGY NEEDS

    On behalf of its partners in the BTC (Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan) and SCP (South Caucasus Pipeline) Projects, BP announced that it is has allocated the sum of US$1 million for the immediate assistance of the new government of Georgia in managing critical energy supplies for its people this winter.

    According to BP’ office in Tbilisi, BP's Group Vice-President, Richard Paniguian who was visiting Tbilisi today, announced the decision after a meeting with President Elect Mikheil Saakashvili.

  9. EU ASSURES GEORGIA’S NEW GOVERNMENT OF SUPPORT

    The EU considers that the January 4 presidential election has opened up new opportunities for Georgia and it looks forward to helping the country to come closer to the European family.

    According to the representation of the European Commission in Georgia, Romano Podi, the President of the European Commission, sent a letter of congratulation to president-elect Mikheil Saakashvili, in which EU’s commitment to assisting Georgia in reforms in stated.

    Now, after the redistribution of funds, 8.5 million EUR has been allotted for the partial repair of a cascade of VartsikheHES, located in west Georgia.

  19. GOVERNMENT TO PAY DECEMBER PENSIONS THANKS TO US ASSISTANCE

    US ambassador Richard Miles, Georgian State Minister Zurab Zhvania and Finance Minister Zurab Nogaideli singed today an agreement, under which Georgia’s government will be able to use $5 million for paying December pension arrears.

    Reportedly, the sum has been derived from the monetization of the US humanitarian wheat, allotted by the US government in September 2003, upon the request of the Minister of Agriculture and Food of Georgia David Kirvalidze.

  20. ACTING PRESIDENT PLEASED WITH ELECTION PREPARATION PROCESS

    The acting president of Georgia Nino Burjanadze has been acquainted with the work of the Central Election Commission towards the January 4 presidential elections today. She said the fact that 1.3 million voters had already undergone preliminary registration provided grounds for holding elections at an appropriate level.
