SO FAR 10 CURRENCY EXCHANGE POINTS JOIN THE ASSOCIATION

According to the National Bank (NB), only 10 of the 314 registered currency exchange points have jointed the Currency Exchange Points Association, established in the mid February.
The Association aims at coordination of the activity in the said sphere, the joint consideration and determination of the measures to resolve the problems.
EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT DELEGATION SURVEYS SITUATION IN GEORGIA

The European Parliament’s delegation, visiting Georgia, today met with Parliament speaker Nino Burjanadze, Vice-speaker from Abkhazia’s autonomy Vakhtang Kolbaia and Zurab Zhvania, a member of Georgia’s Parliamentary delegation to the Council of Europe.
Burjanadze requested the European Parliament’ representatives for their more active involvement into the Abkhazian conflict settlement and expressed criticism toward Russia, which well seizes the situation for pressuring on Georgia.

As Veterinary Department’s chair Levan Ramishvili reported, according to the Agriculture Minister’s ban it is prohibited to bring in to Georgia the food from the countries where communicable deceases are spread. The Ministry makes the list of these countries on basis of the information from the International Epizootic Bureau.

During February 19th press conference one of the National Movement’s leaders Koba Davitashvili offered Laborists to unite tickets since the two parties have many a points of convergence in their stands. He said suchunification would aim to receive about 2/3 at the Parliament and successfully raise the question on the pre-term Presidential elections.
COUNCIL OF EUROPE’S MONITORING GROUP VISITING GEORGIA

Within the framework of its visit of February 12-15, the Council of Europe’s (CE) monitoring group composed of 2 experts met behind closed doors with Parliament Speaker Nino Burjanadze and representatives of some Parliamentary factions and committees.
Burjanadze said this meeting with the experts attended to the question of the violations, traced during the previous elections and pointed out the importance for the coming elections to be fair.
STATE OFFICE IMPOSES RESTRICTIONS ON JOURNALISTS

PARLIAMENT CONSIDERS ATTACK ON NEW RIGHTS’ OFFICE

The spring session opened today with a meeting of the Parliamentary bureau, which discussed yesterday’s attack on the New Rights’ office together with representatives of the law enforcement forces.
Deputy Interior Minister Zurab Khazhaliareported that according to preliminary data up to 40 people had participated in the attack, and pointed out that the case was considered as the conflict within the party.
NUMBER OF MAGTI GSM SUBSCRIBERS INCREASED BY 46%

The overall number of the subscribers in 2002 reached 260,000, which is by 82,000 (46%) more the 178,000 of 2001, Zurab Beselia, Magti GSM mobile communication operator’s marketing manager, told Sarke.
Magti GSM’s transfers to the budget increased by 86.6%.
MINISTRY OF TRANSPORT AND COMMUNICATIONS OPPOSES CONSTITUTIONAL COURT’S RULING

Minister of Transport and Communications Merab Adeishvili told a press conference today the Constitutional Court “has exceeded its power and has made a shocking decision”, which ruled imposing administration fees illegal.
The Minister said the decision was biased, unacceptable both economically and juridically, and was directed against reforms in the transport sphere.

AGITATION AROUND THE MINIMAL SALARY

This week the Parliament’s Health and Social Welfare Committee paid its due to the United Democrats faction’s initiative to increase the existing 20-Lari minimal salary to 115 Lari – the subsistence level, a question of particular concern at the end of last year.
Dilis Gazeti writes although being a pro-Governmental faction’s representative, Zezva Gugunishvili, the Committee’s chair, naturally had no intent to hold a hearing in favor of the United Democrats, Zhvania’s teamappeared in full composition and got hold of “a wonderful chance to advertise” its initiative.

The Parliament session today broke off due to a conflict between MPs Petre Tsiskarishvili, Movement for Democratic Reforms faction, and Vasil Gigolashvili, Alliance for New Georgia.
Therefore, Parliament could not adopt a resolution on facts of breaking law and disturbing public order while considering results of June Sakrebulo (the self-government body) elections in Tbilisi.
