    Kakha Tskitishvili, a deputy chairman of the civil aviation administration, resigned yesterday evening, following the sharp statements by Mikhail Saakashvili, a presidential candidate and the National Movement leader.

    Tskitishvili, who worked as a private lawyer before appointment, 2 days ago was appointed by administration head Zurab Chankotadze as his deputy, Shorena Darchia, head of the air administration press-service, told Sarke.

  2. CHINESE IMPORTS TO GEORGIA DOUBLES, GEORGIAN EXPORTS DECREASES

    According to the Economics, Industry and Trade Ministry, the trade turnover between Georgia and China for the past nine months has made up $19.98 million compared to about $5.65 million in the similar period last year.

    The official import of Chinese products this year has considerably increased to $18.51 million compared to $4.94 million for the similar period last year, Andro Dvali, a leading expert of the Ministry, told Sarke.

  3. NATIONAL MOVEMENT LEADER PROMISES TO RESTORE TERRITORIAL INTEGRITY

    National Movement held a session today. Mikheil Saakashvili, the party leader and the presidential candidate, in his address to the session, pledged he would direct his efforts to the restoration of country’s territorial integrity, and get back Abkhazia and the Tskhinvali region.

  4. TBILISI AND BATUMI NEGOTIATIONS LAUNCHED

    The acting president of Georgia Nino Burjanadze visited today Batumi and met Ajara leader Aslan Abashidze behind closed doors.

    Burjanadze told journalists later: “The dialogue has started and the main thing now is to go ahead with it”.

  5. STATE MINISTER CONSIDERS ENERGY ISSUES WITH FUEL AND ENERGY MINISTER AND TELASI MANAGEMENT

    State Minister Zurab Zhvania and Fuel and Energy Minister Mamuka Nikolaishvili visited jointly today the head office of TELASi, Tbilisi energy distributor, to consider with director general Dangiras Mikalajunas problems with energy supply of the capital.

    Zhvania says there is “chaotic situation” in the energy system and a “certain decision will have to be made” in order to provide 24-hour electricity delivery for Tbilisi and minimum for regions.

  6. REFORMS PLANNED IN RAILWAY DEPARTMENT

    The country’s new authorities plan to carry out reforms in the Railway Department together with foreign experts.

    An 11-member New Supervisory Board of LLC Georgian Railway is going to be set up in two days.

  7. BUDGET-2004 WITHDRAWN FROM PARLIAMENT

    Finance Minister Zurab Nogaideli announced today the draft budget-2004 had been withdrawn from the Parliament. First, the document will be reviewed and then reintroduced to the Parliament in February 2004.

  8. NEW DEPUTY STATE MINISTERS APPOINTED

    Today State Minister Zurab Zhvania announced appointment of new deputies – Tamar Beruchashvili and Guram Absandze.

    Beruchashvili, who was deputy foreign minister earlier, will be in charge of relations with donors and coordinate aid programs.

  9. HEAD OF TRADITIONALISTS AGAINST BOYCOTTING ELECTIONS AND SAAKASHVILI

    Akaki Asatiani, head of Traditionalists, considers boycotting the forthcoming elections inadmissible, as, he says, the processes in the country must be kept “within the framework of the Constitution”.

    Asatiani says election of the head of National Movement Mikhail Saakashvili as president is admissible, although he regards this as an “amusing political incident”.

  10. CEC SETS DATES FOR VOTERS’ PRELIMINARY REGISTRATION AND DEFINES FUNDS FOR HOLDING PRESIDENTIAL ELECTIONS

    The Central Election Commission (CEC) proposes that voters should undergo preliminary registration at polling stations between December 15 and 21. From 21 to 25 December members of district commissions will have to recheck the data.

  11. TBILAVIAMSHENI MANAGERS LEAVE FOR DUBAI TO ATTEND AIR SHOW

    Nodar Beridze, the director general of Tbilaviamsheni, Tbilisi aircraft plant, and Zurab Seskuria, the director of foreign economic relations, left for Dubai today to take part in an international air show to be held from December 7 to 11.

    Seskuria told Sarke, Tbilaviamsheni is leasing 25 square meters on this show to introduce the enterprise – its video materials, exhibition stands and model planes.

  12. FINANCE MINISTRY’S STRUCTURES HAVE NEW CHIEFS

    Finance Minister Zurab Nogaideli has appointed David Galegashvili, the deputy Finance Minister, as head of the Tax Department.

    Galegashvili told journalists, “strengthening and recovery of the system” would be the key task; as for everyday work, it would focus on the tax collection.

  13. KUTSNASHVILI OF SOCIALISTS AGAINST PRELIMINARY REGISTRATION OF VOTERS

    Zakaria Kutsnashvili of Socialist Party says the preliminary registration of voters is a “dangerous initiative” as it may cause the deliberate reduction of the number of voters.

    A presidential candidate is to collect at least 700,000-800,000 votes in the elections not to raise doubts about his legitimacy, Kutsnashvili told a briefing today.

  14. FINANCE MINISTER COUNTS ON DONORS’ SUPPORT

    Finance Minister Zurab Nogaideli met today with representatives of donor organizations and diplomatic corps. During the meeting, possibilities of providing financial support to Georgia were considered.

  15. US PROVIDES FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE FOR GEORGIA

    Lynn Pascoe, the deputy assistant secretary for European and Eurasian affairs of the US Department of State, announced the fields in which the financial support will be provided for Georgia after he had met with representatives of the provisional government of the country today.

    The US plans to disburse to Georgia $5 million to solve urgent issues.

  16. HEW AUTHORITIES PROMISE TO MAKE PUBLIC SERVICE ACCESSIBLE TO EVERYONE

    For the first time today, Mikheil Saakashvili has officially been introduced to the public as a presidential candidate of the alliances Saakashvili – National Movement and Burjanadze-Democrats.

    The acting president of Georgia Nino Burjanadze said it had been an absolutely right decision to nominate a common candidate by the alliances and that she was confident they would win.

  18. CEC INTRODUCES PRELIMINARY REGISTRATION OF VOTERS AND REVERTS TO ADDITIONAL LISTS

    Zurab Chiaberashvili, a new chairman of Central Election Commission (CEC), has suggested today an alternative way of solving the problem of voters’ registers.

    Shalva Natelashvili, head of Laborists, considers forthcoming January 4 presidential election illegal and does not intend to participate in it.

    Natelashvili told a news briefing today, as a result of the elections, which will be “rigged and prove destructive for the country”, “terrorist dictate” will be established.

  20. WORLD BANK COUNTRY DIRECTOR AND NEWLY APPOINTED COUNTRY MANAGER VISITING GEORGIA

    Donna Dowsett-Coirolo, the World Bank Country Director for Georgia and the newly appointed Country Manager Roy Southworth, who are visiting Tbilisi, will meet with the provisional government of the country to discuss the ways in which the World Bank can render its assistance to the country.Today Donna Dowsett-Coirolo and Roy Southworth met with Georgian Finance Minister Zurab Nogaideli and the president of the National Bank Irakli Managadze.

    According to the NB, Dowsett-Coirolo said the World Bank had been pleased with the monetary policy conducted in Georgia.
