    The Branch Economic Committee considered and approved today draft changes to the Tax Code, which exempt teachers from the income tax. The draft has been launched by the Movement for Democratic Reforms.

  3. PARLIAMENT DEMANDS FROM THE FUEL AND ENERGY MINISTRY INTRODUCTION OF ENERGY POLICY CONCEPT

    The Branchwise Economic Comittee today demanded from the Ministry of Fuel and Energy to introduce the concept of energy policy in one week.

    Demur Giorkhelidze, the chairman of the committee, said the concept must be confirmed until the spring session of Parliament finishes.

    Anti-Corruption Commission of Parliament has declared today that in about two weeks it will finish preparation of a conclusion on the debt of Georgia to the Austrian Raiffaisen bank.

    The debt of $46 million arose because the credit, taken from Raiffaisen by LLC Angloil in order to supply Georgia with fuel in 1998, was not covered.

  9. NEW RIGHTS, NATIONALS, DEMOCRATS AND LABORISTS UNITE EFFORTS AGAINST THE FALSIFICATION OF ELECTIONS

    Today New Rights signed a political agreement with National Movement, United Democrats and Laborists, which calls for a united action in the process of Parliamentary elections.

    In particular, the agreement calls for the coordination of efforts not to allow delay of the date of election or disruption of electoral process, the support for holding elections under the aegis of OSCE.

    Today in the Parliament the members of United Democrats fraction beat the leader of the Socialists Vakhtang Rcheulishvili.

    Among the MPs were Mikheil Machavariani, Zurab Tskitishvili, Vasil Maglaperidze, Gia Sherazadashvili, who demanded from Rcheulishvili apologizes in connection with his previous day incorrect utterances on the national belonging and sexual orientation of United Democrats’ members.

  12. PARLIAMENT WILL REVIEW THE BILL ON TOUGHENING PUNISHMENT FOR HUMAN RIGHTS VIOLATION

    The joint sitting of three parliamentary committees (of Public Health, of Human Rights and of Legal Issues) discussed the document considering adequate changes and supplements to the Criminal Code. The committees altogether agreed to submit the bill, prepared by the Ministry of Justice, to the Parliament's plenary meeting in the near future.

    Adequate amendments and supplements to the law “On Organizing Lotteries, Gambling and Other Profit Games” were considered and approved at today’s governmental session.

    As the project introducer, Deputy Finance Minister Zurab Soselia said, the document is determining the legal ground for this sphere and the questions of state regulation.

  14. BILL OF PRIVATIZATION OF STATE-OWNED AGRICULTURAL LANDS UNDER DISCUSSION

    Today representatives of NGOs and farmers have participated in the discussion concerning the bill “On Additional Privatization of State-Owned Agricultural Lands” in the Agrarian Committee of Parliament.

    The bill prepared by the State Land Management Department is assumed to be presented to Parliament in May, though the government has not discussed the document yet.

  15. THE PARLIAMENT WORKS ON THE NEW TAX CODE

    The Tax Code presented by Industrialists was adopted in the first reading in March. It is assumed that in the second reading, the document will be introduced to the Parliament for approval in the beginning of May.

    Parliament today continued consideration of the bill on the creation of special economic zones (SEZ), which has been launched by the Ajara Autonomous Republic and introduced by the Agordzineba faction.

    After the executive authorities and Parliamentary factions stated their position towards the bill its consideration finished today but the voting will take place on 24 April.

  17. PEOPLES’ BANK PLANS TO INCREASE ITS CAPITAL BY THE END OF THE YEAR

    Peoples’ Bank plans to rise it share capital from the current “10 million Lari to 15-20 million”, Andro Devdariani, the director, told Sarke. Currently Peoples’ Bank (former Agroprombank) is the 8th among 26 Georgian banks in terms of share capital.

  18. LEADER OF UNITED DEMOCRATS CALLS FOR UNIFICATION OF THE OPPOSITION

    Zurab Zhvania, the leader of United Democrats, told a news conference today the party had been in talks with opposition leaders, who “understand well the historical importance of the unification”. According to Zhvania they have so far failed to reach any agreement and feared, their failure to do so would mean the realization of the President’s plan of breaking up the opposition.

  19. TALKS WITH BRITISH AND TURKISH AIR COMPANIES PROVE UNSUCCESSFUL

    As you know, representatives of British Mediterranean Airways and Turkish Airlines have recently visited Georgia to negotiate terms for resuming regular flights.

    However, Zviad Mukbaniani, head of the Foreign Relations Committee of Parliament, said talks “so far, have not yielded any results”.

  20. FINANCE MINISTRY WANTS TO SIMPLIFY TAX CODE AND MAINTAIN CURRENT REVENUES

    The Finance Ministry has drawn up a new draft tax code and submitted it to the government, Zurab Anteladze, head of the financial policy department, told Sarke.

    The draft is not ruled out to be combined with that of introduced by the Industrialists faction (which Parliament has confirmed it in the first reading).
