    British Mediterranean Airways will resume regular London-Tbilisi flights starting March 29, Zurab Chankotadze, head of the administration, told journalists today. The company will make two flights a week.

    Yesterday the investor made a decision to shut down the plant as the Rustavi city court cancelled an agreement with Ares International.

    National Security Council Secretary Vano Merabishvili, Justice Minister Zurab Adeishvili and Prosecutor General Irakli Okruashvili, who took office after the new authorities had come to power, have proposed to simplify investigation procedures.

    Merabishvili called for the Parliament today to timely make legislative changes designed to increase efficiency of fighting corrupt officials.

  4. CONFRONTATION BETWEEN RUSTAVI METALLURGIC PLANT SUPERVISORY BOARD AND INVESTORS

    The supervisory board of the Rustavi Metallurgic Plant has raised today protests against the decision of the management of the enterprise and the Italian investor (company Ares) to sell the part of discarded equipment as scrap.

    The members of the board claim that the investor is going to sell the scrap for about 15 million lari at and buy by the sum materials for making pipes.

    Managadze says the reason for the consideration of the question was that the assistance strategy set up in the former government would undergo some changes in the new one.

  17. WORLD BANK COUNTRY DIRECTOR TO VISIT TBILISI NEXT WEEK

    According to a World Bank representative, Donna Dowsett-Coirolo, the Bank Country Director for Georgia, will visit Tbilisi on 20-23 January.

    The purpose of her forthcoming visit is to discuss with the government the bank's draft Country Assistance Strategy and areas where the bank could best provide its support in the next few years.

  18. NEW ECONOMICS MINISTER ENTERS OFFICE

    Irakli Rekhviashvili, who was confirmed by the Parliament yesterday on the post of Minister of Economics, Industry and Trade, was introduced with the staff of the Ministry today.

    Rekhviashvili said the primary task at that stage was the definition of duties of the Ministry and delimitation of terms of reference with other bodies.

  19. CEC CONFIRMS SAAKASHVILI’S VICTORY IN PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION

    National Movement leader Mikheil Saakashvili received 1,890,256 votes, or 96.27% of the total vote, according to the results of the January 4 presidential election announced today by the Central Electoral Commission (CEC).

    The reminder of the vote was distributed among five presidential candidacies in the following way: 36,398 voters or 1.85% voted for Teimuraz Shashiashvili, 5,154 of voters or 0.26% for Roin Liparteliani, 4,782 of voters or 0.24% for Zaza Sikharulidze; 192 of voters or 0.21% for Kartlos Garibashvili; and 1,901 of voters or 0.10% for Zurab Kelekhsashvili.

  20. ECONOMICS MINISTRY HAS NEW HEAD

    The Parliament Today unanimously approved Irakli Rekhviashvili’s appointment as the Economics, Industry and Trade Minister. He will replace Giorgi Gachechiladze on this post.
